Would they come out ahead if they can't afford it to begin with?

Homeownership has never been more expensive than it is right now at this very moment. It is absolutely crushing this generation financially. All of my cohort is dead broke and in debt. It takes two incomes just to remain semi-solvent. All their money and time goes toward their houses and they don't live their lives. Read the two income trap....

I can not buy any property and rent it at positive cashflow. Now even investors are priced out of the market, so what shall I do, jam more people into a student home? It takes 6 students to get $200-300 positive on a rental. Sorry, but that's not worth it for me.

Real estate agents are killing their own industry just like they have in the US. I know you'll be around to pick up the pieces and sell below current markets and I'll be there to buy, but I'm not pretending to help buyers out by pushing them into high mortgages that will last a lifetime. These loans are fully recourse.

And by the way, you assume that prices will continue to rise. What if they don't?

Don't celebrate high consumables it's irrational. What do you do, work for the banks? Let me guess, you sell real estate. Was I right?

[Dean Manton] comments on Market Update

Civil D, the only problem with your point is that you picture the "buyer" as a perpetual first-time buyer. In that case the longer they avoid home ownership, the more they fall behind. Conversely, once you buy property you begin to accumulate equity and then higher prices are good news. This means prices are certain to decline and not rise. Best those with real estate already can hope for is price stability but as we go up, this becomes less and less probable.

Prices rising only serves those who have houses and don't need to live anywhere. High prices hurt everyone. I don't understand why ever increasing prices is universally good news? Do we celebrate high gas prices and high food prices? What about other commodities/consumables?

frugalboy comments on Market Update

I think you have some of your figures in the wrong spots.
